Yankee Doodle Art
Looking for some fun ways to incorporate art into your Fourth of July? Well, look no further. If your family loves arts and crafts you will enjoy these great ideas. These art projects will bring out the patriotism, and artist, in kids of all ages. Young and old will enjoy them.
Get creative with these crafts and be sure and make enough to share with grandma, grandpa and all the aunts and uncles. Why not set up a craft table at your Fourth of July picnic and get everyone involved?
Revolutionary Straw Paintings
You will need :
- straws
- paints (you can use poster or liquid tempera for all of these activities that call for paint)
- red, blue and white (you may need to thin it a bit) and heavy paper.
Give each child a straw and a piece of paper. Drop a small blob of paint onto the paper, and then blow through the straw onto the paint. This will cause the paint to spread out like fireworks. Toddlers up to teens enjoy this one.
Stars & Stripes Forever
You will need
- sponges cut into star shapes and long thin strips (stripes)
- red, white and blue paint
- paper
You can also use potato stamps. Cut a potato in half. Draw a star or several stripes on the raw half of the potato. Now cut around and away from the design. You want your designed to be raised. Let your kids do a stars and stripe collage or make their own flags. Use a piece of poster board or rolled out paper to make a wall size mural.
Terrible Tory Goop
You will need:
- 2 cups water
- 6 cups of cornstarch
- red or blue food coloring
Drop food coloring into the water until you get it the shade you want. Stir in the cornstarch a little at a time.
Ben Franklin Prints
You will need:
- Plastic scouring pads
- star or flag shaped cookie cutters
- paints
- paper
Pour some of each color of paint onto a saucer. Dip the scouring pad into the paint. Let drip off any excess paint. Gently press onto the paper. Continue this until your paper looks the way you want it to. Now dip the cookie cutters and press them on top of the “fireworks”. You may want to use a different scouring pad for each color.
