Make a Simple Anemometer
An anemometer can tell you how fast the wind is moving. While your simple anemometer can't tell you exactly how fast the wind is blowing it gives you the general idea. Real anemometers can tell the exactly how fast the wind is moving.
What you need:
4 small paper cups
A permanent marker
2 strips of stiff, corrugated cardboard (4 ins. x 8 ins. each)
Ruler
Stapler
push pin
Sharpened pencil with an eraser on the end
Modeling clay
watch with a second hand
What you do:
1.Place a large red X on one of the cups or use a different color cup.
2.Lay one cardboard strip on top the other like an X. Staple together in the middle.
3.Find the exact middle of the strips where they cross and mark it with a pencil.
4.Making sure the cups are all pointing in the same direction staple them to the end of the strip.
5.Pin the cardboard strips onto the top of the pencil by pushing the push pin through the cardboard into the eraser. Make sure the strips can turn.
6.Make a base for your anemometer with modeling clay. Place the pointy end of the pencil into the clay.
7.Set outside and get ready to check the wind speed.
